Vitiligo is a long-term skin disorder that leads to loss of pigmentation. In contrast, generalized vitiligo, which is the most prevalent type, is often distributed bilaterally in different areas of the body. The less segmental form of vitiligo means that it may develop in a specific area or areas of the body and progresses rapidly at first and then plateaus. The pattern by which patches of depigmentation spread differentiates and manages variation, where longer areas remain spread or remain stable or re-pigmented sporadically, completely or partially. However, relapse is unpredictable and depends on variables such as overall involvement of the immune system and treatment efficacy.

Vitiligo is thought to have multiple causes, including environmental triggers, polygenic susceptibility background, and immune-mediated mechanisms induced by causation. These mutations combined with other environmental influences, such as sunburn, industrial chemicals, and even stress, make the individual susceptible to disease.

Surgical treatments that may be considered for stable, localized vitiligo are melanocyte transplantation and skin grafting. For extensive vitiligo patients who would prefer uniformity of color by eliminating all pigmentation of their skin, pigmentation therapy using topical agents to lighten unaffected skin is available; She also has non-medical options, like makeup and self-tanner, to help hide her pigmented areas.

Ongoing studies have been initiated with a view to molecular and genetic understanding of vitiligo, which will lead to successful treatments.
