Physical Symptoms of Vitiligo

 


Vitiligo is actually a chronic skin disease when white spots appear on the skin, which is caused by the loss or destruction of melanocytes in milder conditions. Melanocytes are cells that produce melanin, the pigment responsible for skin color. Symptoms of vitiligo usually vary from person to person, depending on the type, extent, and speed of progression. Vitiligo can also affect parts of the body including the eyes, nose, mouth, and genitals. The distribution of these spots can vary from person to person, with some people experiencing widespread pigmentation and others having only a few localized spots.

2. Loss of Color in Hair

Hair growing in or near areas of the skin that lack pigmentation often loses its color and turns white or gray. This condition, called leukotrichia, is another distinguishing feature of vitiligo.

Areas affected:
Sometimes leukotrichia can affect the eyebrows, eyelashes and beard as well as scalp hair.
Loss of hair pigmentation may occur before, during, or after the onset of skin maceration and indicates the diagnosis of vitiligo. In some cases, the loss of hair pigmentation was limited beneath the skin, above the patches of depigmented skin, while in others, it extended beyond them.

Effect: Loss of pigmentation from the hair does not actually harm a person, but for people with dark hair it can be psychologically isolating: the difference between the pigmented and pigmented area looks very stark. 3. Change in Mucosal Pigmentation

This type of involvement is more commonly found in a particular subtype of vitiligo called mucosal vitiligo.

Features: Loss of pigmentation in mucosal tissues resulting in pale or white areas that are often clearly demarcated. Unlike depigmented skin patches, mucosal changes are less likely to be detected unless they occur in visible lenticular areas such as on the lips or inside the mouth.
They are usually not painful, although the person may be concerned about their appearance.

Effects: This type of alteration has not been shown to cause seriousness, as it causes most damage to the cosmetic ones, but sometimes, it also causes feelings of anxiety or discomfort, especially with intimacy or communication.

6. Sensitivity To Sunlight

The discolored areas from this condition lose their natural protection from ultraviolet (UV) radiation because melanin is a natural skin pigment secreted by the skin. Therefore, these areas are more likely to cause burns and other damage due to ultraviolet radiation.

Implications: In general, this means that individuals with vitiligo should implement very strict sun protection strategies. This includes using high-SPF broad-spectrum sunscreen, wearing sun-protective clothing, and using shade during peak sun hours to prevent sunburn while reducing your risk of getting skin cancer.

7. Symmetrical Patch Growth

Most of the discolored patches found in generalized vitiligo also occur in pairs on opposite sides of the body. This characteristic of the bilateral pattern is one of the features that makes the diagnosis of the condition different from other skin pathologies.

Implications: The symmetric character of vitiligo depigmentation indicates an underlying systemic aspect pointing to the involvement of autoimmunity. Recognizing this pattern aids early diagnosis and management, especially when it applies to patients who may show partial and mild skin depigmentation.
