Introduction To Yoga And Yogic Practices

Yoga is the Sanskrit word coming from the word' Yog',which is written as'Jod 'in Hindi or'Joining 'in English. This means a joining of the 'Jivatam' (Human) with'Parmatma'(God). Through the practice of Yoga, an individual can have Self-realization and obtain God. The word' Yog'came to be called Yoga in English. For an ordinary person, Yoga is simply another means of physical exercise. A person through physical exercises only develops the muscles in their body. But through Yoga, one develops the conditioning of even all the internal organs such as -heart, brain, spleen, liver, lungs, intestines, etc. Apart from these important organs, through Yoga all the glands, like-thyroid, pituitary and penial gland of the brain, function better.

Yoga is practical aid, not a religion. The ancient practices - yoga - focus on the harmonizing of body, mind, and spirit. It produces a healthy body and happy mind and spiritual growth through postures, breathing exercises, and meditation, hence giving holistic scope to the concept of well-being and inner balance. The regular practice of yoga will lead you into a feeling of peace and well being but also give you a feeling of being at one with nature. With the passage of time, people, especially the Westerners, are finding cure for their chronic health problems and getting a peace of mind through Yoga in these days, and they are also curious to know what all includes in the term of Yoga and what exactly is Yoga. Many of us well know the benefits of Yoga about our health, but not all of us have the knowledge about the origin and perfect definition of Yoga. Undoubtedly, one of the most popular beliefs is that Yoga simply involves stretching and warm-up exercises. Originated in ancient India, typically, Yoga means 'union' between the mind, body, and spirit.
It involves the practice of physical postures and poses, often called 'asana' in Sanskrit. The ultimate goal of practicing yoga would be to balance the body and mind, so that one can obtain self-awareness and enlightenment.
In a nut shell, it's one who increases physical, mental, and spiritual balance that allows one to connect with the inner self as well as with the external world. It promotes inner peace and self-realization. To accomplish it, Yoga uses different movements, breathing exercises, relaxation technique, and meditation. Yoga had long been ascribed to a healthy and happy lifestyle of balanced approach.
The oldest physical discipline in existence known to mankind, Yoga brings stability both to the body and the wavering mind. The lubrication of joints, ligaments, and tendons of the body increases.
Research in the field of medicine reveals that Yoga is the only sort of physical exercise that offers a complete conditioning to the body due to its massaging effect on all the internal organs as well as glands. It decreases the chances of many diseases. Yoga can bring a permanent positive change in the lifestyle of anyone who practices it regularly.
Yoga is the best means to provide you with an all-round well-being and physical fit. By doing meditation, pranayams-some yogic breathing exercises; you can get rid of all the stress and live a healthier life.
Actually, it is one of the best medicines known to mankind that could cure chronic diseases otherwise very hard to cure with other types of medications. People suffering from backaches and arthritis are mostly advised to do asanas that concentrate on the exercise of the muscles at strategic locations. Pranayamas are the best breathing exercises to increase the capacity of lungs. The wonderful thing about Yoga is that its positive effects on health and the mind manifest over time. Another specialty about Yoga is its vast choice of asanas.

Depending upon the stamina and overall health, you can choose from the mild pranayamas and asanas to high-intensity asanas. It is a medication without the actual use of medicines. Most importantly, no side effects can be noticed from the habit of doing Yoga regularly.
You just need to know the most suitable postures according to your ability and body structure. On top of that, you should know the proper way of holding these postures as any wrong attempt may cause sprains and injuries.
It is the consciousness that connects us to something, so we can feel and experience it, someone, or something.
The experience of connecting is a state of yoga, a joyful and blissful, fulfilling experience. There is no definition of what yoga is. In order to experience truth through yoga, we need to study its classical definitions and reflect on our understanding of it. If we want to connect with the intuitive, creative part of ourselves and live with the eternal Self, then we have to consider what yoga really is. In every definition of yoga, a little part of the ocean of knowledge and experiences emerges-from all the forms that their yogic path takes.

 Land of Yoga

Science of Yoga The science of yoga has its origin thousands of years ago, long before the first religion or belief systems were born. According to Yogic lore, Shiva is said to be the first yogi or ādiyogi and the first guru or ādiguru. Several thousand years ago, over at Lake Kanisarovar in the Himalayas, ādiyogi flowed his profound knowledge into the fabled saptarishis or "seven sages." These sages then moved this powerful Yogic science to various corners of the world-from Asia, Middle East, northern Africa, to South America. Curiously enough, modern scholars have recently taken great interest and astonished everyone with the close parallels that prevail between ancient cultures of the world. But it was only in India that this Yogic system was given full expression. Such was Agastya, the saptarishi, who roamed about the Indian subcontinent planning out this entire culture around a core Yogic way of life.

Yoga is broadly regarded as an "immortal cultural outcome" of the Indus-Saraswai Valley Civilisaion daing back to 2700 BC – and has proved itself to suit both material and spiritual uplift of humanity. Many seals and fossil remains of the Indus-Saraswati Valley Civilization bear yogic motifs and figures in meditative postures, which implies that Yoga practices took place in ancient India.
Such relics, some of which bear an uncanny resemblance to current Yoga āsanas, confirm that Yoga sādhana (spiritual practice) was known and possibly widespread during this period. The discovery of such depictions points to the ancient roots of Yoga and links it to one of the earliest-known civilizations in the world. Seals and the idols of the Mother Goddess are looked upon typically as associated with Tantra Yoga. Artifact evidence of seals and idols will exist if it represents an early realization process of spiritual practices focused upon fertility, divine feminine, and cosmic energy, all aspects integrated into Tantra Yoga traditions.

Its existence can be traced in folk tradiions, Vedic and Upanishadic heritage, Buddhist and Jain tradiions, Darshanas, Ramayana, epics of Mahabharata including Bhagawad Gita and theisic tradiions of Shaivas, Vaishnavas and Tantric tradiions. Though Yoga was practiced during the pre- Vedic period, the great sage Maharishi Patanjali systematized and codified then existing Yogic practices, its meaning, and its related knowledge through Patanjali's Yoga Sutras.

After Patanjali, so many sages and Yoga masters contributed a lot in preservaion and development of the field with quite well-documented pracices and literature. Yoga has spread to all over the world by the teachings of eminent Yoga masters from ancient imes to the present date.
Today, everybody has convicion about Yoga pracices towards the prevenion of disease, maintenance, and promoion of health. Millions and millions of people in the world have been benefiting from Yoga, and the practice of Yoga is blossoming and growing more vibrant with each passing day.
