Introduction
Oleander is a tree whose height is about 15 to 20 feet. Its leaves are 4 to 6 inches long and 1 inch wide. The leaves are pointed at the tip, rough from below, white valley-like and smooth from above. Oleander trees are easily found in forests and gardens. Oleander flowers are very famous and its flowers mostly bloom in summer season. Its pods are flat, round and 5 to 6 inches long. Its fruits, flowers and roots are all poisonous. There are four species of Oleander - white, red, pink and yellow.
White Oleander is used the most as a medicine. By scratching or breaking the Oleander tree, a white liquid comes out which is used as a medicine. Some people believe that Oleander trees are so poisonous that even snakes do not come near it.
Properties
The juice of oleander is bitter, sharp, astringent, small, dry and hot. Its ripe fruit is bitter. It cures leprosy, skin diseases, wounds, itching, insects, fever, palm, heat, gout, paralysis and syphilis. It is also used to remove dog poison and cure eye diseases.
Harmful effects
Oleander is a type of poison which can damage the lungs if eaten. Its consumption can stop the heart and breathing. Therefore, extreme caution should be taken while using it as a medicine.
Treatment of various diseases
1. Snake and scorpion poison:
By rubbing the root of white oleander and applying it on the sting or by drinking the juice of its leaves, the poison of snake or scorpion is removed.
2. In case of dog bite:
Make a fine powder of the bark of the root of white oleander and mix 60 mg of it in 4 teaspoons of milk and give it to the patient twice a day for a week. This removes the poison of the dog.
3. Wounds:
Make powder of dried oleander leaves and apply it on the wound, the wound heals quickly.
4. Boils:
Make a paste by grinding the red flowers of oleander and apply this paste on the boils 2 to 3 times a day. This cures the boils quickly.
5. Ringworm:
Ringworm is cured by grinding the root of oleander in vinegar and applying it on ringworm 2 to 3 times regularly.
Make an ointment by mixing oleander leaves, amla juice, sulphur, mustard oil and kerosene. Applying this ointment on ringworm cures ringworm. Ringworm is cured by rubbing the root of red or white flowered oleander in cow's urine and applying it. Its paste is also used to cure piles and leprosy.
6. Itching:
Take equal quantity of oleander leaves, root, flower and stem and prepare a paste of 100 grams. Cook this paste in 500 ml mustard oil. When half of it is left while cooking, filter it and fill it in a bottle. Applying it on itching area daily cures itching. It is also used to cure many types of skin diseases.
Roasting oleander leaves in mustard oil and applying it on itching area cures skin itching. Cooking oleander leaves in 250 ml white sesame oil and applying it on the skin cures both wet and dry itching.
7. Piles:
Grind oleander and neem leaves together and prepare a paste. Apply this paste on piles 2 to 3 times daily. This dries up piles and causes them to fall off. Grind the root of oleander with cold water and apply it on the hemorrhoids that come out during diarrhea. This cures piles.
8. Impotence:
Grind 10 grams of white oleander root and cook it with 20 grams of vegetable ghee. Applying this prepared ointment on the penis in the morning and evening cures impotence.
Grind the bark of the white oleander root finely and make a paste by grinding it with the juice of bhatkataya. Applying this paste on the rest of the penis except the head of the penis at an interval of 21 days cures impotence.
9. Opium habit:
To get rid of the habit of opium, grind 100 milligrams of oleander root finely and make a powder. Consuming this powder in the amount of 2 teaspoons with milk regularly for a few weeks cures the habit of opium.
10. Joint pain:
Grind red oleander leaves and mix them with oil to make a paste and apply this paste on the joints. Applying this paste on the joints in the morning and evening provides relief from pain.
11. Dhaturog:
Making a decoction of white oleander leaves and drinking it cures dhaturog and diseases caused by heat etc.
12. Testicle itching:
Cook the white or red flowered oleander root in oil and apply this oil on the itching of the testicle. This removes the itching of the testicle and also removes boils and pimples.
13. Testicle swelling:
Grind white oleander leaves with kanji, heat it slightly and tie it on the testicle. This removes the swelling of the testicle.
14. Toothache:
Brushing the teeth with the branch of white oleander twice a day cures toothache and strengthens the teeth.
15. Greying of hair:
Grind white and red oleander leaves in milk and apply on head to reduce greying of hair (Palita Rog). Use of yellow coloured oleander is more beneficial.
16. Hair fall:
Grind oleander root, danti and bitter gourd together and cook with banana juice and oil. Applying this paste on head stops hair fall.
17. Pain and swelling:
If any part of the body gets swollen, prepare a decoction of red or white flowered oleander leaves and massage. This gives quick relief from swelling.
To get rid of swelling and pain, grind red or white flowered oleander root in cow urine and apply. This cures swelling and pain.
18. Syphilis:
Rubbing the root of the red-flowered oleander in water and applying it on the affected area is beneficial. Making a decoction of its leaves and washing the wound is also beneficial.
Grinding the white oleander root in water and applying it on syphilis cures the wound, swelling, burning sensation and pain.
19. Leprosy (white spots):
Boil 200 grams of oleander leaves in a bucket of water and take a bath with this boiled water. This cures the wounds of leprosy. Grinding the root of the white or red-flowered oleander and mixing it with cow's urine and applying it on leprosy provides relief.
Boil 100 grams of white oleander leaves in 2 liters of water. When 1 liter is left after boiling, filter it and mix it in a bucket of water and take a bath. Preparing water in this way every day and taking bath for a few months cures leprosy. By extracting juice from the root bark of oleander and applying it on the affected area, leprosy and other skin diseases are cured.
By rubbing the root bark of oleander with water and applying it on leprosy (leprosy) marks, the marks are destroyed.
20. Cancer (old wound):
Dry the oleander leaves in the shade and make its powder and sprinkle it on the wound. This cures the wound.
21. Favus and fungus disease:
Cook the white or red flowered oleander root in oil and by massaging this oil on the affected parts, the complaint of favus and fungus is cured. This oil is also used in swelling of wounds, leprosy, dry itching and scab diseases etc.
