Sri Chitra Tirunal Institute of Medical Sciences in Thiruvananthapuram has obtained a US patent for treating cancer with turmeric. The institute claims that cancer can be treated with the curcumin element present in turmeric. Why only curcumin
According to the lead researcher Dr. Lisi Krishnan, curcumin present in turmeric is easily absorbed in the body and fights cancer. To eliminate cancer cells, curcumin will be released directly in the tumor area. It will directly attack cancer cells without harming normal cells. It has also been proved in many researches that it kills cancer cells.
This is how the treatment will be done
According to the director of the institute, Asha Kishori, curcumin will be delivered to the body through an implant 'wafer'. The wafer will contain both curcumin and albumin. After removing the tumor through surgery, the wafer will be implanted in the cancerous part. The albumin element present in the wafer will collect the cancer cells and curcumin will go into these cells and kill them.
This research has been done in collaboration with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). After getting the patent, its clinical trial will now begin and soon this technology will be available to cancer patients.
