Anorexia (Introductiom, Causes And Symptoms)

Anorexia or lack of desire to eat food (anorexia) is a symptom that appears in many other diseases. Therefore, this disease (anorexia) has little importance independently. Well! This disease can be caused by diseases of the stomach, intestines, liver and other parts of the body. A patient suffering from 'anorexia' does not feel hungry, he remains without food for the whole day. (Remember that generally the 'hypothalamic centre' in the brain controls hunger.)

The main causes of this disease are written below-

Fever, malarial fever, infectious diseases, liver diseases such as jaundice, hepatitis, cancer, stomach diseases and intestinal diseases, ulcers, cancer and other diseases, tuberculosis and other diseases of the chest or lungs, congestive heart failure, uremia, hyperparathyroidism, Addison's disease and fear, grief, anxiety, anger, depression and other mental diseases.

Among all the above causes, stomach, liver and intestine problems and mental distress affect a person the most. In most patients, 'constipation' occurs due to eating oily and less fibrous food and slow functioning of intestines due to drinking less amount of water at the time of meal and lack of physical labour (exercise/workout) is also the cause of this disease.
If seen from the viewpoint of physical diseases, this disease mainly occurs as a result of liver and stomach problems, but in this disease, mental causes are more important than physical causes.

• Lack of appetite also occurs due to lack of vitamin 'B' complex in the body.

• Excessive accumulation of stomach (constipation) also results in lack of appetite.

• Presence of 'worms' in the body is also considered to be the main reason for lack of appetite.

• Consuming nutritious food and not doing any work for the whole day leads to loss of appetite.

• Myxedema, Addison's etc. are such diseases due to which the metabolism in the body becomes very slow, which results in loss of appetite.

• Fever, constipation, pneumonia, smallpox, measles and other infectious fevers are also considered to be the causes of loss of appetite.

• Patients often lose appetite due to chronic diseases.

• Some patients have to remain in bed for a long time, for example, heart attack, dislocation of the spine, etc. These also often cause loss of appetite in the patient.

• Excessive greed and consumption of odors also contribute to loss of appetite. Mental conditions like hysteria, epilepsy, anemia etc. also contribute to loss of appetite or lack of appetite.

• In today's hurried era, due to tension, appetite reduces or a person is unable to eat food despite being hungry or if one is hungry and the food is also tasty but still the food does not taste good and the morsels of food do not go down the throat - all these come under 'loss of appetite'.

• The biggest reason for the 'exacerbation' of this (loss of appetite) disease is the patient himself. Who, by his carelessness/irresponsibility, takes the disease to an aggravated stage and makes it 'lethal'. If the loss of appetite increases even a little over a period of time, then it is known as 'Myasthenia'.

• The main symptoms of this loss of appetite are written below: The patient does not feel hungry. After eating a little food, the stomach starts feeling full, the taste of hunger seems to have changed. The patient burps and water comes back in the mouth (from the stomach).
The mind does not feel like doing any work. There is laziness and tiredness in the body. There is anger and irritability in nature. Due to not eating enough food for a long time, there is weakness in the body and the body weight decreases. The patient is always suffering from mental anxiety. The patient starts feeling more tired even after doing little work. The patient does not feel hungry even after not eating. Constipation persists. The patient becomes thin day by day. The patient has pain and suffering in the chest. The face of the patient becomes dirty and dry. There is presence of heat and bad smell in the mouth. In long-term diseases, anemia (lack of blood) occurs. Due to the disease continuing for a long time and in the absence of proper treatment, the body's Dhatus (seven metals) juice, blood, flesh, fat, marrow, bone and semen start drying up and the patient's weight falls drastically.

Anorexia Nervosa

This disease is usually seen in girls who have a constant desire to reduce their body weight. In this, the patient's weight keeps decreasing and he reaches a state of 'malnutrition', but no 'reason' is found on getting them tested. In this, the patient sometimes remains hungry and sometimes eats too much. These patients always have a fear of increasing body weight in their mind, that is why they do not eat anything even when they are hungry, but they look fit and healthy. This disease is more prevalent in girls who are more worried about their beauty and obesity. Such girls are usually stubborn, angry, fond of solitude and suffer from mental disorders and they may also suffer from hysteria. On their physical examination, the following symptoms are found:

• Decrease in blood pressure and temperature.

• Symptoms of vitamin deficiency.

• Lack of flesh.

• Skin becomes dry and wrinkles appear.

• Menstruation does not occur normally in girls and hair remains dry.

• These patients are healthy at the mental level.

Investigations

• Blood tests and X-rays should be done to rule out any other disease.

• All tests come out normal in anorexia.
