In common/domestic language, it is known as 'Indigestion' and 'Badhejami'. In this, the food eaten by the patient is not digested properly and the patient's appetite also decreases. Usually, the patient suffering from this disease goes to the doctor with many types of complaints, such as - my stomach is not well, there is heaviness in the stomach, food is not getting digested normally, I don't feel like eating food etc. Therefore, indigestion/ Dyspepsia Badmi is the indigestion. Due to the slowness of the stomach, the food does not get digested and the immaturity of the food eaten is known as 'Indigestion'.
The main causes (Aetiology) of the disease are written below-
• Not eating food on time and eating too much food.• Eating too much fried and oily food.
• Eating food too quickly with too much water without chewing properly.
• Avoiding fiber rich food and eating market or homemade food with too much spices.
• Always being worried.
• Lazy nature, always working while sitting, not exercising.
• Some other physical reasons - such as ulcer, dyspepsia, liver and gall bladder problems.
• Inappropriate intake of medicines.
• Eating solid and heavy (takes time to digest) food.
Extremely hot and extremely cold food.
• Sleeping during the day and staying awake at night.
• Uncomfortable bed. • Indigestion occurs due to physical and mental reasons and the food consumed is not digested properly.
• Due to excess water in digestive juices, their digestive capacity decreases and food is not digested, which leads to indigestion.
• Drinking too much tobacco, tea or alcohol.
• Doing too much physical or mental work.
• Tying the clothes worn around the waist too tightly.
Drinking too hot or too cold water at the time of eating or drinking water mixed with ice.
• Bathing in a damp place.
• Eating in large quantity and engaging in heavy physical labour or sexual intercourse.
Most of the patients suffering from this disease come to the doctor with different symptoms but the main symptoms are given below- • Heaviness in the stomach.
• Stomach remains bloated.
•Gas formation and movement in the stomach.
• Sour belching.
• Burning sensation in the epigastrium.
• Sour water filling in the mouth (back from the stomach).
Nausea and vomiting.
• Lethargy in the body.
• Lack of appetite.
• Sometimes severe pain in the stomach.
• Heaviness in the body and headache.
• Constipation or frequent diarrhoea.
Special-
When the patient comes to the clinic/dispensary, the doctor must know the following three things from the patient-
• Place and time of pain.
• Do the symptoms always remain or occur occasionally.
• No special symptom - occurs after meals.
• In indigestion - the patient feels mild pain with heaviness in the entire stomach. In ulcers or other stomach related problems, the pain is severe and occurs at a particular place.
• Continuous/persistent stomach pain - can also be caused by carninoma. Sometimes pain can also be caused by excessive drinking (after drinking alcohol) or medicines. Indigestion has also been seen due to seasonal changes.
• Sometimes the patient gets indigestion after a particular (heavy) meal, such as - after consuming spicy food or fried food, excess pulses or milk, in many people after consuming sugar or sweet things, milk, pulses, cheese etc.
After eating, due to excessive formation of air (gas) the stomach gets bloated and causes discomfort. This problem is caused due to the reduced secretion of some 'digestive secretions' (enzymes) in people.
• Normally 20 to 60% of the air/gas present in the body goes into the stomach through the mouth while eating. Remember that the amount of air/gas depends on the way of eating. In anxiety or nervousness, more air goes into the stomach with food, due to which the stomach feels full and heavy.
• When there is more fermentation of carbohydrates and protein in the intestines, more gas is produced. This makes the stomach feel bloated.
• The problem of indigestion is also caused due to lack of digestive juices.
• Patients suffering from other diseases also complain of this disease (indigestion). Such as - congestive heart failure, urine abnormality (Uraemia), tuberculosis and cancer etc.
• When this (indigestion) disease becomes chronic, gas starts forming in the stomach of the patient, nerves get affected. Weakness occurs. The patient's head remains heavy and the patient starts feeling dizzy.
Diagnosis of the disease
• The patient feels less hungry.• The patient becomes physically weak.
• The patient becomes irritable.
• The patient is more worried.
• The doctor should first inquire the patient thoroughly about the disease. This helps in knowing the 'root cause' of the disease.
• Thereafter, the patient's physical condition and stool-urine should be examined. This way, all other causes can be easily known. • By the symptoms of the patient - like bloating of the stomach after eating, sour belching, desire to vomit, pain in the stomach, frequent discharge of gas/air from the mouth or anus and due to excessive indigestion/dyspepsia, the patient starts having stomach pain and loose stools (diarrhea).
Prevention / Control
• Do not consume excess water with food.• Do not eat in large quantities.
• Eat food at fixed time.
• Avoid spicy and fried food. • It is also necessary to avoid oily food.
• Include clean, washed salad, green fresh vegetables and fiber rich vegetables in food in large quantity.
• In case of indigestion – fasting is the best and beneficial. One should fast at least once a week.
• Mint chutney, vinegar chutney and ginger jam are especially beneficial for the patient suffering from indigestion. This ignites the 'fire'. Raw coconut water, raw kernel and raw papaya vegetable are beneficial.
• Mixing rock salt with food and giving it to the patient is also beneficial. • If the digestive power of the patient needs to be increased, then prepare a powder of myrobalan, dry ginger, jaggery (all the medicines in equal parts) and keep it safe. It is beneficial to consume half a teaspoon of this powder with fresh water before meals.
• Vegetables like fenugreek and bathua also help in digestion.
• Onion, ginger, lemon, asafoetida, coriander, garlic and roasted cumin seeds should be used in food. These increase the secretion of digestive juices.
• The patient should be given light but nutritious food.
