Benign tumors, on the other hand, being non-cancerous and less malignant than these malignant types, do not invade adjacent organs or metastasize to different areas of the body: benign tumors are generally less likely to progress than their malignant counterparts. Tumors grow slowly, and if they require surgical removal, a low recurrence rate of the tumor can be expected following surgery. However, they can pose major health risks depending on their size and location. For example, a benign tumor in the brain can press on vital structures, causing severe symptoms or potentially life-threatening complications.
Cancer development essentially occurs through multi-step processes, involving a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Genetic mutations are very important for this disease because they affect the normal functioning of genes that control cell growth and repair. They may occur spontaneously or be inherited from parents. Environmental risk factors such as exposure to carcinogens (such as tobacco smoke, ultraviolet rays, and certain chemicals) are also potential risk factors for the development of cancer. Lifestyle changes such as diet, physical activity, and alcohol or tobacco use also increase susceptibility to cancer.
