General Overview Of Medicinal Plants


Human culture has always depended heavily on medicinal plants. Medicinal plants have always been at the forefront of the culture of almost every civilization as a source of medicine. It is believed that traditional medicines contain medicinal plants in abundance, which are also the source of many modern medicines. For thousands of years, medicinal plants have been used to treat diseases, preserve food, add flavor, and prevent disease epidemics. The biological properties of plant species used throughout the world are generally the result of secondary metabolites produced by the plants. Products obtained from plants control the growth of microorganisms in various conditions. We have given a general overview of medicinal plants in this review.

Introduction 

For centuries, humans have depended on nature for their basic needs, such as medicines, shelter, food, fragrances, clothing, taste, fertilizers and means of transportation. In developing countries, where herbal medicine use has a long history, medicinal plants play an important role in the healthcare system for a significant portion of the world's population. There is an increase in the cultivation, recognition and financial support of medicinal plants in both developed and developing countries.

Plants have formed the basis of specific traditional medical systems that have been practiced for thousands of years. Plants still exist today to provide new medicines for humans. Medicinal plant treatments are based on hundreds to thousands of years of experimental findings, and some of the beneficial properties attributed to plants have been disproved. The earliest cuneiform carvings were found on clay tablets in Mesopotamia around 2600 BC; Oils of Commiphora species (myrrh), Cedrus species (cedar), Glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice), Papaver somniferum (poppy seed), and Cupressus sempervirens (cypress) are among the ingredients that were used.
