Though Shatavari is a herb with useful and beneficial properties for both men and women, yet it is especially beneficial and useful for women. Properties: It is heavy, cold, bitter, tasty, chemically rich, sweet in taste, enhances intellect, increases digestion, nutritious, smooth, beneficial for eyes, cures tumours and diarrhoea, increases milk in breasts, strengthens the body, cures vata-pitta, inflammation and blood disorders. It is of two types, small and big. Names in different languages: Sanskrit- Shatavari. Hindi- Shatavar. Marathi- Shatavari. Gujarati- Semukha. Bengali- Shatamuli. Telugu- Ettumatti Tenda. Tamil- Sadavari. Kannada- Majjige Gadde. Persian- Shakakul. English- Ares Mosus. Latin- Asparagus Racemosus. Introduction: It is a thorny plant of creeper type which spreads in many branches from the root itself. Its leaves are small and like soya (dirt). The flowers are small and white in colour. Its branches are triangular, smooth and outlined. Use: It is used in various prescriptions to cure diseases and make the body strong and shapely. During pregnancy: The details of nine months therapy for pregnant women have been given. It has been told to use asparagus powder with milk in the second, sixth and seventh months and to take enema of asparagus oil in the ninth month and to keep cotton wool soaked in it in the vagina while sleeping. This keeps the vagina flexible, strong and smooth, due to which the pregnant woman does not have much labour pain during delivery. Leucorrhoea: Licking 5 grams to 10 grams of asparagus powder mixed with a little pure ghee every morning and evening and drinking lukewarm sweet milk provides quick relief from leucorrhoea.
