Disease Introduction, Causes and Symptoms
This is a serious and long-term malnutrition in which there is gradual wasting due to inadequate or undigested food. (Mainly, it is not always possible to determine the 'cause' in infants suffering from this disease.) This disease makes the child's body weak, feeble and frail. The child keeps crying all the time and his nature becomes irritable. The sick child wants to remain attached to the mother every moment, he does not want to sleep. Such disease-affected children become weak and become just a skeleton in a short time. If proper medical treatment is not done for the child, he dies prematurely.
Main causes of the disease
• When the mother does not get a balanced diet, then the daily amount of vitamin 'D' is not fulfilled by her breast milk.
• Lack of mother's milk and nutrition of the child through other foods.
• Pregnant woman suffers from acidity during pregnancy.
• Indigestion and extreme weakness.
• Anemia is also a cause. Intestinal worms.
• Old tuberculosis or syphilis disease of parents.
Lack of suitable climate and diet.
• Living of the child in a dark place without sunlight.
• Staying in sunlight, fire (kitchen) or feeding the child with milk during intercourse or immediately after intercourse.
Main symptoms of the disease
• Head is large, forehead is bulging. Anterior fontanelle is large. And it gets filled with delay.
• Swelling visible in the ribs (mainly-clearly between the fourth, fifth and sixth ribs).
• Enlargement of wrist and ankle. Legs bend outwards near the knee.
•Due to weakness of abdominal muscles – abdomen looks like a potbelly.
•Delay in eruption of teeth.
•Dry and rough hair.
•Excessive sweating on head of children.
•Common complaints of diarrhoea. Green-yellow diarrhoea.
• Higher chances of respiratory tract infection in children.
• Restlessness at night. The child keeps turning his head on the pillow.

• The child lags behind in getting up, sitting, crawling and walking as per his age.

• Small protrusions appear in the bones of the skull (which get pressed with a crunching sound). (This symptom disappears after one year.)
• The bones of hands and legs appear crooked.
• Enlargement of the liver and spleen and the flesh of the buttocks dries up.
• The flesh of hands and feet dries up, neck becomes thin.
A special kind of foul smell comes from the whole body.
• Continuous salivation from the mouth and yellow phlegm from the nose.
• Constipation in some children.
• The child's face becomes scary.
• Eyes become sunken and dull.
Diagnosis/Identification (Investigation)
• Sweating on the head.
• Restlessness.
• Tossing the head from side to side.
• Swelling of the skull.
• Enlargement of the fontanelle.
• Teeth not coming out on time!
• Press the ear lobe of the child (in which women get holes made to wear earrings) hard with the thumb and index finger. If the child does not feel any pain after doing this, i.e. the child does not cry, then it is a symptom of him suffering from rickets.
• Keep the yolk of a hen's egg on your palm and keep it close to the child's side. By doing this, if the child is suffering from rickets, the yolk automatically gets drawn into the child's stomach.
• On X-ray, the far ends of the radius and ulna bones are worn out and bowl-shaped.
• The child suffering from this disease does not have natural heat in his body, rather the body temperature remains low. There is a deficiency of vitamin D and calcium in his body.
Treatment
• Give 5 to 15 ml of fish liver oil (according to digestive power) 1-2 times a day.
• Keep goat's liver in a clean cloth, tie it in a bundle, crush it, extract the juice and give it daily in the quantity of 1 spoon as it is or mixed with sugar.
• Boil cabbage, bathua, spinach, amaranth and fenugreek and feed it to the sick child or give its juice in the quantity of 15-30 ml 1-2 times a day.
• Keep the child naked in the rays of the rising sun for 15-25 minutes every day (so that sufficient amount of vitamin D reaches his body).
• Feed 1/2 yolk of a hen's egg to a child aged 2-3 months and the whole yolk of an egg after this age.
• Give half a liter of milk to the sick child every day.
